The new album from the project Story – Takzvaná duša (“The so-called soul”) brings ten songs linked by a distinctive atmosphere, powerful lyrics, and careful curation. It’s an album meant to be experienced as a whole. The songs span different genres and feature different vocalists, yet a single thread weaves through them – in both mood and lyricism.
Composer Marián Zima says the songs came together naturally over the past several years and that the album simply “locked them in time.” His aim was to show that today’s listeners – from their thirties to their seventies – can still find music that speaks to their real experiences: challenges, turning points, doubts, and farewells. Story has never been defined by genre; what matters is authenticity, emotion, and a performer who can breathe life into a song. The album opens with Iba dym, a piano miniature by Pavol Morochovič, which sets the tone and flows seamlessly into the expansive blues-rock track Alive and Breathing, performed by international singer Eva Carboni. In Příliš dlouho jsem byl takhle, Michal Prokop shows his most vulnerable side, followed by Zuzana Homolová’s understated and intimate rendition of Stretávka zo strednej. Milan Kňažko once again leaves a strong impression – both in the nearly seven-minute Rodné mesto and the title track Takzvaná duša, bringing depth that only a lifetime lived can offer. Martin Chodúr surprises with a clarinet solo in Mění se čas, Peter Lipa adds energy in the blues Anjel strážnik, and the live premiere of Všichni jsme herci, performed with Lucia Šoralová, captures the power of Story on stage. The album closes with the vibrant blues Ľudia sú dnes k sebe hyeny. The so-called soul is a mosaic of stories that must not only be heard – but felt.
