In mid-January, U.S. President Donald Trump received Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Their talks covered the European Union, the war in Ukraine, and Slovak–American cooperation in nuclear energy. The meeting was also attended by U.S. secretary of state Marco Rubio and his Slovak counterpart, Juraj Blanár.
Prime Minister Fico was accompanied by Minister of Economy Denisa Saková and State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Marek Eštok. “A wide range of international issues was discussed; we focused in particular on Ukraine, and the U.S. representatives were interested in our positions because they knew we do not simply echo Brussels and have long expressed our own views on the war in Ukraine,” Fico said. The day before the meeting with Trump, representatives of both countries signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in civilian nuclear energy. The agreement includes the construction of a 1,200-megawatt nuclear unit at the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant, based on a U.S. design. The project is to be carried out by Westinghouse. “Both countries fully realize that serious energy challenges cannot be solved by wind turbines or photovoltaics, and that the foundation for the future lies in the rapid development of nuclear energy,” Fico noted.
