Shortly after the Florida meeting between U.S. president Donald Trump and Slovak prime minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD), U.S. secretary of state Marco Rubio arrived in Bratislava. Talks at the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic focused on cooperation in nuclear energy, the war in Ukraine, and Slovakia’s defense spending.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, Fico expressed concern that it could continue for a long time. “If Slovakia can be helpful in any peace initiatives, we are fully prepared,” he emphasized. On defense expenditures, he noted that Slovakia will need to strengthen its capabilities and added that part of the defense budget will be used to develop dual-use projects. The prime minister also referred to the Visegrad Group, whose presidency Slovakia will assume in June. “If there is a topic where it would be useful to speak in the V4–U.S. format, and if our partners agree, we will be ready to organize such a meeting,” he said, mentioning energy cooperation as an example.
