Predstavila siahodlhý dokument, bez verejnej diskusie, bez stanovenia priorít, a vlastne ani nevieme s čím odišli do Bruselu.

HLAS – sociálna demokracia sa teší dôvere ľudí a my ich nechceme sklamať.

Peter Pellegrini: I Take People's Trust In Me with Great Humility

I set up an interview with Peter Pellegrini at the beginning of the summer. However, disputes culminated within the SMER party, Peter Pellegrini quit it and started working to set up a completely new party. So only now was the right time to meet. He hasn't changed much since I last spoke to him two years ago. He is still ambitious, charismatic and Slovak people are currently pushing him up the political stairs.

The February election redrew the political map of Slovakia. Judging by your criticism of the government, you probably don't think it went in the right direction. Which steps of the coalition in power do you see as least helpful? And is there something you would give them a credit for?

If something surprised me the most, it is their great unpreparedness to govern and administer the country. Before the election, we warned the public about a certain extent of amateurism and unprofessionalism, but I think it exceeded all expectations. It is probably unnecessary to evaluate the performance of the Prime Minister, I just want to note that his performance on the international scene is far from a dignified representation of the Slovak Republic. In a very short time, the governing coalition managed to disrupt social dialogue, break its promises of transparent governance, and failed to deliver economic and social assistance to the people, resulting in great unease in society. The exposure of intra-coalition issues in public does not contribute to trust in politics and politicians. However, if I want to point out something particularly negative it is the disruption of trust between the public and the state, which results in growing radicalism. The society is no longer easy to trust measures at the time of the Corona crisis and it is therefore hard to face a pandemic. If I am to give them a credit for something, it is that they have filled some ministerial positions with strong personalities, I mean, for example, Minister of Foreign Affairs Korčok, who was in our government, or Minister of Justice Kolíková, who also worked for us. But their performance is lost in the overall rule under Prime Minister Igor Matovič.

How do you do politics at a time when practically the only topic is Coronavirus? Are there things that Slovakia should urgently address, but it's not doing so now?

As I said, the Corona crisis and its economic and social consequences are a major challenge for every government in the world. Protecting the population from a health and economic point of view is a priority, as its success will also affect the country's future, whether it falls to the bottom or escapes only with minor losses. In this context, I appreciate the EU's decision to allocate the financial recovery package to individual countries. Here again, however, I just have to note that the governing coalition has failed. If they are not able to effectively manage the socio - economic current reality, they cannot design the future of Slovakia. They presented a lengthy document, without a public debate, without setting priorities, and we do not even know what they went to Brussels with. They do not have a plan for future Slovakia, the individual coalition parties are fighting over the recovery plan proposals, and this in turn is causing chaos.

At the end of last month, MPs voted against forming your party's parliamentary group. How do you see this step and what does it mean for the work of your Members?

HLAS - Social democracy started as a response to people's appeals. They feel deceived and seek a social democratic perspective based on professionalism and expertise. Given the published polls, where we are currently in leading with 19 percent, the position of the coalition parties was predictable. It does not have a direct impact on the work itself, because we are a party that works intensively and offers not only criticism but also solutions. At the time of the Corona crisis, we offered a proposal for a pandemic clean-up, the financing of towns and villages, a proposal to help sports and tourism, which made sense and would help, but the government coalition incomprehensibly rejected them. We focus on working in the regions; we want to work for people and help them, and parliament is only one part of our politics.

In a recent poll of preferences, your party came first, and in another poll you came as the second most trusted person among senior government officials, right after President Čaputová. Are these results a great encouragement for you?

I accept this people's trust with great humility. At the time of collecting signatures, I went through practically the whole of Slovakia and I must say that I was surprised by the trust of the people they placed in us. We collected 94,000 signatures to register the party, which is practically a record in the modern political history of Slovakia. We want to be the VOICE (HLAS) of people who want to live in dignity in Slovakia and who have confidence in the state. I am glad that we are the voice of young people, young families, but also seniors, or the weak and socially vulnerable. The right-wing government also jeopardises employees with its measures, and the protection of their social rights forms the basis of our politics. In a time of tension of social uncertainty, we want to be a peaceful force that offers people perspective.

What are your party's plans for the near future? After all, the next parliamentary election won’t be until 2024...

Patience and work for people. This is the credo that will be with us every day. HLAS - Social democracy enjoys the trust of the people and we don’t want to disappoint them. I look forward to meeting them, we want to go to the regions of Slovakia and listen to them and translate their ideas into politics. That’s how I did it as prime minister and that’s how I’ll go about it as the leader of the opposition.

How did you celebrate your recent 45th birthday?

Birthdays always offer a little reflection time on what we have done and what we can do and change in our lives so that we can move meaningfully forward. I celebrated it in a family circle, as that’s been my support throughout my life.
