“If the Nobel Prize ever comes to Slovakia, it will definitely be into a woman‘s hands.” This is how poet Kamil Peteraj responded to the question of how he perceives the significance of the reader‘s poll Slovak Woman of the Year.
This conversation took place during the opening showing of the portraits of the ladies nominated for the Slovak Woman of the Year 2024 award. The event was held at the Bratislava Castle, which in itself carries strong symbolic meaning. “Just as this Castle, towering over our capital city, is a symbol of the whole of Slovakia, so too do the qualities of the nominees for this award, such as determination, courage, perseverance, and dedication, embody the values of Slovakia,” said the main organizer of the event, Mária Reháková, to the attendees. The event, which introduces successful women to the public, was attended, among others, by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Saková. “First of all, I thank Mária Reháková for her enthusiasm and energy. When I went through the list of nominated women, I was moved. From scientific researchers and doctors to executives, I found one common denominator, and that is woman. And when someone says that women have it tougher in life, they are absolutely right. We live two lives because our work doesn‘t end when we close the office door; on the contrary, a second shift begins at home. The only rest we allow ourselves is at night. I am proud of you, dear nominees, for creating values in life that we can honor you for. You have shown us that it is worth fighting for something in life and staying dedicated to your profession. I wish you all the best‘”
