The fateful love of Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII, the departure of the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry from the United Kingdom, or the iconic dance between Princess Diana and John Travolta – stories that show how the American world has shaped the British monarchy.

American-born Wallis Simpson reshuffled the cards of the British monarchy forever and changed the course of history. She was considered elegant, intelligent, and sociable, yet many also saw her as controversial and manipulative. When she met the heir to the British throne, Edward VIII., she was already married for the second time. Edward was known for his casual relationships, even with married women. When they met in 1931, no one expected their relationship to grow into deep love.

He abdicated for love
The British heir to the throne fell deeply in love. She was different from the others. Women competed for his attention, while Wallis initially remained distant. That captivated him. At first, they met at aristocratic parties, in private residences, and at country estates. Their relationship intensified. During Wallis’s marriage, they also began meeting at Fort Belvedere, Edward’s private residence in Windsor. They enjoyed luxury holidays and yacht trips. Wallis was still married, and their relationship gradually became a public scandal. In January 1936, Edward’s father, King George V., died, and Edward ascended the throne. The British monarchy saw his relationship as a major problem. Even after Wallis divorced, neither the government, the public, the Church, nor the royal family would have approved the relationship. At the time, it was simply unacceptable, and so Edward decided to abdicate at the end of 1936. He thus entered history as the king who gave up the throne for love.

Hunted at every step
The Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry also made history with a relationship that shook the British monarchy. She, a successful actress, and he, a fairy-tale prince admired by countless women. The public followed their love story with fascination. It began when Prince Harry noticed Meghan Markle on Instagram in a short video with a Snapchat filter, posted by a mutual friend. They later met in person on a blind date in London. After that, they continued seeing each other in strict secrecy, including a private trip to Botswana. Their relationship remained under wraps for only a few months before British tabloids exposed it, triggering a wave of headlines, speculation, and attacks unlike anything the royal family had experienced in a long time. Prince Harry openly accused the media of harassment and racist remarks directed at Meghan. The media pursued them relentlessly, giving them no peace. The entire frenzy surrounding them resembled the persecution of Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. After one year and four months, they married. The British public never fully accepted the Duchess of Sussex. Reports of tensions between Meghan and members of the royal family gradually surfaced. The tabloids relentlessly targeted her, ultimately leading to legal action. Over time, she came to be portrayed as a problematic member of the royal family. In January 2020, a shocking turn of events followed – the duchess and the prince decided to step back from royal duties and live outside the United Kingdom. They eventually established their home in the United States.

The dance from Saturday Night Fever
Princess Diana also visited the United States several times. During these trips, she engaged in charitable activities, including raising awareness about AIDS and supporting children. Her first official visit in 1985 with her husband Charles, at the invitation of President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan, became legendary thanks to the unforgettable dance between Princess Diana and actor John Travolta. The royal couple spent three days in Washington, surrounded everywhere by crowds eager to catch a glimpse of Diana, who was immensely popular in America. For the state dinner, she chose an iconic dark blue velvet gown, complemented by a striking pearl necklace with a sapphire. It is said that Nancy Reagan told John Travolta that it was Diana’s dream to dance with him. Travolta later recalled that it was not easy for him to appear confident and ask her to dance. At midnight, he gently tapped her on the shoulder. She turned around and bowed her head in her characteristic manner. They danced together for fifteen minutes to music from Saturday Night Fever. Both later described the moment as unforgettable and almost fairy-tale-like. Photographs of the dance traveled around the world. At that time, Diana was already aware that her marriage involved a third person, and she had two young children. Although the chemistry between her and Travolta was evident, she never pursued anything further.

Strong and important relations
Unlike the turbulent relationships of the past, today official visits and diplomatic relations play the key role. King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort, set out at the end of April 2026 on a significant state visit to the United States of America on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of US independence from Great Britain, where they met with President Donald Trump. At the same time, the American president paid an official visit to the United Kingdom in 2019, where he met Queen Elizabeth II. These meetings demonstrate that despite past tensions and differences, relations between the United States and the British monarchy remain strong and important.
