Jan Wolf, člen KDU-ČSL a praktikující katolík, je předsedou Výboru pro kulturu, výstavnictví, cestovní ruch a zahraniční vztahy Zastupitelstva hl. m. Prahy a působí i v komisích pro památkovou péči a vznik koncertního sálu hlavního města Prahy.
Celý svět se potýká s pandemií covidu-19, která zasáhla snad do všech oblastí života. Jak jsme na tom byli s kulturou před pandemií?
To je dobře položená otázka. Za poslední roky se Praha umisťovala v top ten různých žebříčků, které sledovaly úroveň kultury ve světových metropolích. Praha se dostala do světové kulturní elity, ke které ostatně stále patří. Samozřejmě tomu hodně napomáhalo kontinuální navyšování finančních prostředků, o které jsem se každý rok tvrdě pral. Pokud bychom ale v naší zemi neměli lidský potenciál a silnou tradici, pak by nám sebevětší peníze nepomohly. Osobnosti, které v nedávné době zesnuly, za všechny jmenujme Miloše Formana, Jiřího Menzela či Karla Gotta, symbolicky připomínají náš obrovský kulturní potenciál.
Čtyři roky jste působil jako radní. Na co jste ze své práce pro Prahu nejvíc pyšný?
Hlavně na to, že jsem stabilizoval rozdělování financí do kultury ve smyslu spravedlivého, transparentního a správně cíleného procesu. Z projektů bych určitě jmenoval rekonstrukci Divadla Na zábradlí. Ve spojitosti s oslavami výročí narození Karla IV. jsme v domě U Zlatého prstenu otevřeli Muzeum Karla IV. A v neposlední řadě mě těší úspěšné zahájení rekonstrukce Šlechtovy restaurace. Je toho více, ale co mne osobně zajímá, je to, co jsem ve funkci radního již realizovat nestihl.
Jak je to v Praze s plánovaným novým koncertním sálem, o který jste jako radní usiloval?
To je přesně jeden z těch projektů, které jsem realizovat nestihl. Ve funkci radního jsem nechal zpracovat Institut plánování a rozvoje hl. m. Prahy IPR rozsáhlou, odbornou a myslím, že velice kvalitní studii pro umístění koncertního sálu, ze které vyplynulo jako ideální místo u stanice metra Vltavská. Jak z hlediska dopravní obslužnosti a blízkosti centra města, tak z hlediska památkové péče a urbanistiky. Trochu nelibě nesu neustálé revize a nové plány pro plány. Ideální místo jsme už našli a je čas přikročit k veřejné soutěži a realizaci, jinak budeme stavět koncertní sál nikoliv pro 21., ale pro 22. století. A to je hodně smutné. Rozhodně to není dobrý signál pro budoucnost pražské kultury.
Na jaký kulturní program si vy sám zajdete?
Osobně jsem nastaven konzervativně, to ale neznamená, že se vyhýbám některým kulturním oborům. Velmi rád a často chodím na činohru, nový cirkus, výstavy fotografií a výtvarného umění jako celku. Nejvíc ale navštěvuji koncerty klasické hudby všech žánrů, od středověku až do současnosti. Díky tomu, že mám rád historii, rád podporuji a navštěvuji i historické projekty, o které v Praze rozhodně není nouze.
Kvůli pandemii zmizely z Prahy davy turistů. Cestovní ruch na tom není úplně dobře, že?
Tady nám vážnost situace jasně vysvětlí čísla. Zprávy z počátku srpna hovořily o 94% propadu v návštěvnosti oproti minulému roku, za druhé čtvrtletí to bylo dokonce skoro 96 %. V Praze zaměstnává cestovní ruch celkem 74 000 osob, což je čtvrtina z celé republiky. Řada z nich navíc za prací dojíždí z okolních krajů. Musíme si uvědomit, že Praha je nejatraktivnějším místem z hlediska cestovního ruchu v Česku, a tak je přirozeně nejvíc postiženým místem v této oblasti. Nelíbí se mi ale argumenty, že Praha má peníze, ať si pomůže sama. To je populistické a krátkozraké tvrzení. Praha produkuje 26 % národního HDP, ze kterého těží celý stát, a proto je rovnice jednoduchá. Když na tom bude Praha špatně, bude na tom hůř celá země. Město může podpořit a i od začátku krize podporuje formou výzev některé projekty v této oblasti.
Praha a historická místa si ale trochu vydechla, na Starém Městě už se lidé netlačí v nekonečných zácpách. Vidíte alespoň v tomhle nějakou malou výhodu?
Ale v čem spočívá to oddychnutí? Jistě, pakliže je turistů až přespříliš, má to negativní důsledky v řadě ohledů, avšak podívejme se na stav pražských památek nyní a třeba před dvaceti lety. Tu vysokou úroveň zachovalosti a neustálé rekonstrukce a restaurace do jisté míry zaplatily peníze z cestovního ruchu. A nesmíme zapomenout, že poznávání cizích kultur a jejich historického dědictví vytváří tolik potřebný rozhled a toleranci, o které dnes každý tak rád hovoří. Není nic horšího než zabedněnost, kdy nevidíte dál než přes svůj plot. To z vás udělá snadno ovlivnitelného člověka bez vlastního názoru předurčeného uvěřit podsouvaným předsudkům o těch cizácích. A tam se jistě dopracovat nechceme.
A jak jsme na tom se zahraničními vztahy?
Praha je závislá na vládních rozhodnutích a opatřeních. To neznamená, že by rezignovala na samostatnou mezinárodní politiku. Ostatně je dobře znám postoj primátora Hřiba k Taiwanu. Samozřejmě, že Praha spolupracuje se sousedními státy a jejich městy, a to nejen s těmi hlavními. Pro nás jsou nesmírně důležité vztahy a spolupráce s radnicemi Berlína, Varšavy, Vídně a Bratislavy, se kterými si velmi často vyměňujeme své zkušenosti. Těch měst je ale po Evropě, a nejen v ní, daleko více.
Když se konal 9. pochod hrdosti Prague Pride, vymezil jste se proti vyvěšení duhové vlajky na budově pražského magistrátu primátorem Hřibem.
Na Twitter jste pak umístil fotku, kde stojíte před budovou magistrátu v tričku s obrázkem rodiny s dětmi a nápisem „My jsme tady taky“...
Rád bych předem řekl, že si vážím a posuzuji každého člověka podle toho, co dělá, umí, jak se chová a ne podle toho, jakou má barvu pleti nebo sexuální orientaci. Ovšem vymezuji se proti okázalému dávání najevo své výjimečnosti nebo nadřazenosti, jako tomu je během týdne hrdosti Prague Pride. Pak se nikdo nemůže divit, že se snažím podporovat rodinu v tradičním podání muž, žena a dítě, bez níž by nemohla existovat žádná společnost a kultura. Evropa vznikla na židovsko-křesťanských kořenech a na tom bychom měli i nadále stavět.
Vy sám máte dvě děti. Jste dobrý táta?
Jaký jsem táta, by spíše měli říci mí synové a manželka. Jelikož jsou kluci už dávno dospělí a nestydím se za ně, tak snad ani oni za mne, a snad bych u nich obstál (směje se).

Hráč basketbalu a fotbalový fanda
Jan Wolf pochází z rodu Zídků, což je v basketbalovém prostředí jedna z nejznámějších českých rodin. On sám hrál závodně basketbal třicet let. Jan Wolf je také zarputilý fanoušek fotbalového klubu Bohemians Praha 1905, a to už od dětských let, kdy si zamiloval Antonína Panenku. Dodnes nevynechá žádné domácí utkání, občas zajede i na utkání na cizí hřiště, kde zrovna Bohemka hraje.
Jan Wolf: There Is Nothing Worse Than Dim-wittedness
Jan Wolf, a member of the KDU-ČSL and a practicing Catholic, is the chairman of the Committee for Culture, Exhibitions, Tourism and Foreign Relations of the City Council of Prague and also works in the Commissions for Monument Care and the Establishment of a Concert Hall of the capital city of Prague.
The whole world is facing Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected almost every area of life. How were we doing with the culture before the pandemic?
That is a well-posed question. In recent years, Prague has ranked in the top ten of various rankings that have monitored the level of culture in the world's capitals. Prague has joined the world's cultural elite, to which it still belongs. Of course, this was greatly aided by the continuous increase in funding, which I fought for hard every year. Though, if there wasn’t the human potential we have and a strong tradition in our country, there wouldn’t be a large enough amount of money that could help us. The personalities who have recently passed away, to name some Miloš Forman, Jiří Menzel or Karel Gott, can all symbolically remind us of our enormous cultural potential.
You served as a councillor in Prague for four years. What are you most proud of about your work for Prague?
Mainly the stabilisation of the fund distribution in culture in the sense of a fair, transparent and well-targeted process. I would definitely mention the reconstruction of the Na Zábradlí Theatre. In connection with the celebrations of the anniversary of the birth of Charles IV. we opened the Charles IV Museum at the U Zlatého prstenu house. And last but not least, I am pleased with the successful start of the reconstruction of the Šlechtova restaurant. There has been way more, but I personally care about is what I didn’t manage to implement in my role as a councillor.
How is it looking with the new Prague concert hall that is planned, which you worked so hard to push through as a councillor?
This is exactly one of those projects that I did not manage to implement. As a councillor, I got made ‘the Institute of Planning and Development of the City of Prague IPR’, which is an extensive, professional and I think a very high-quality study for the location of the concert hall, providing the ideal location at the metro station Vltavská. Both in terms of transport services and proximity to the city centre, and in terms of conservation and urban planning. I'm a little reluctant to having constant revisions and making new plans to plan. We have already found the ideal location and now it is time to proceed with the public tender and implementation. Otherwise, we we’ll be building a concert hall not for the 21st, but for the 22nd century. And that'd be very sad. This is definitely not a good signal for the future of Prague culture.
What cultural events do you go to yourself?
Personally, I am quite conservative, but that does not mean that I avoid some areas of culture. I really like and often go to the theatre, the new circus, exhibitions of photography and fine arts. But I mostly go to concerts of classical music of all genres, from the Middle Ages to the present. Thanks to the fact that I love history, I also like to support and visit historical projects, which are definitely not in short supply in Prague.
Everyone who has recently visited historic Prague must have noticed that crowds of tourists have disappeared from it. Tourism isn't doing well, is it?
The mere look at the figures can explain the gravity of the situation. Reports from the beginning of August spoke of a 94% drop in visits compared to last year, in the second quarter it was even almost 96%. In Prague, tourism employs a total of 74,000 people, which is a quarter of the entire country. In addition, many of them commute from the surrounding regions. We must realize that Prague is the most attractive place in terms of tourism in Czechia, and so it is naturally the most affected place in this area. But I don't like the arguments that Prague has the money to help itself. This is a populist and short-sighted statement. Prague produces 26% of the national GDP, and the entire state benefits from it, and therefore the equation is simple. When Prague's not doing well, the whole country will be worse off. The city can support and has supported some projects in this area since the beginning of the crisis.
But Prague and historical sights have got a bit of break, people in the Old Town are no longer crowded in the endless traffic jams. Do you see a small advantage in this?
But what is the break about? Of course, if there are too many tourists, it has negative consequences in many respects, but let's look at the state of Prague's monuments now and, for example, twenty years ago. This unusually high level of preservation and constant reconstruction and restoration of monuments has been some extent paid by the money from tourism. And we must not forget that learning about foreign cultures and their historical heritage creates the much-needed perspective and tolerance that everyone loves to talk about today. There is nothing worse than dim-wittedness, when you can see no further than over your fence. This will make you an easily influenceable person without your own opinion, destined to believe in biases about strangers. And we certainly don't want to become that.
And how are we doing with foreign relations? With whom is Prague on good terms and with whom not so much?
Prague is dependent on government decisions and measures. This does not mean that it would resign to dependent international policy. After all, the attitude of Mayor Hřib towards Taiwan is well known. Of course, Prague cooperates with neighbouring countries and their cities, and not only with the capitals. Relations and cooperation with the town halls of Berlin, Warsaw, Vienna and Bratislava are extremely important, and we exchange our experiences very often. But there are many more such cities in both Europe and beyond.
When the 9th Prague Pride Pride March took place, you set out against the hoisting of the rainbow flag on the building of the Prague City Hall by Mayor Hřib. You then placed a photo on Twitter, where you are standing in front of the town hall in a T-shirt with a picture of a family with children and the inscription "We are here too"...
First, let me say that I respect and judge everybody by what they do, how they behave and not by the colour of the skin or sexual orientation. However, I oppose the ostentatious display of uniqueness or superiority, as was the case during Prague Pride Week. Then no one can be surprised that I am trying to support the traditional family structure, that is a woman, man and a child, without which there could be no society and culture. Europe was rooted in Judeo-Christian roots and we should continue to build on that.
You yourself have two children. Are you a good dad?
My wife and sons should say what kind of a dad I am. Since the boys have been grown up for a long time and I'm not ashamed of them, hopefully they are of me neither, and I hope I’d stand the test (he laughs).

Basketball player and football fan
Jan Wolf comes from the Zídek family, which is one of the most famous Czech basketball families. He himself played competitive basketball for thirty years. Jan Wolf is also a die-hard fan of the Bohemians Praha 1905 football club. He’s loved them since he was a child, when he fell in love with Antonín Panenka. To this day, he does not miss any home match, and sometimes he even goes to see a match on a non-Bohemian pitch if Bohemians are playing there.
