The detailed 3D model ordered by the Trenčín museum shows the current state of the regional dominant - the Castle of Trenčín. This high level digital version of a beloved historical monument will allow for this cultural heritage to be safeguarded for future generations. Aside from that, it will help with research, construction work, or tourism services.
Its size puts the Castle of Trenčín among the largest in Slovakia. The area of the castle consists of almost 70 buildings, the accessible surface is more than 31 500 square meters. Creating a detailed 3D model, which allows for the castle to be viewed and measured in perfect detail directly from a computer, was made possible by precisely scanning the castle area, and every single building included in it. It was created with the help of a Slovak company which focuses on these projects on an international scale. “Combining the technologies of photogrammetry, laser scanning and geodetic survey created not only a technically precise, but also a visually faithful and attractive 3D presentation of the actual appearance of the castle as it stands today,” says the director of the Trenčín museum Peter Martinisko.
A time of intense construction work
The castle is preparing for a time of intense construction work, with renovation to be done on the Clock Tower, lower courtyard, amphitheater, walkways, the cavalier, the Jeremiáš bastion, but also the restoration of the higher castle, and construction at the southern fortifications. “A precise digital survey makes our work significantly easier when it comes to drafting the proposals for all this renovation work. It will save a good amount of money and time. The investment of 9 800 Euro will return to us with time,” adds Martinisko. The museum plans to use the model to improve the quality of tourism services, or as the foundation for a digital 3D version of the castle. It will also become freely available to view online, making it accessible even for disabled citizens.
