A unique photography exhibition called Krása v kroji (The beauty of the folk costume) is currently taking place in the capital of Hungary.
After Prague, Vienna and the Romanian Oradea, there’s one more city out there that supports Slovak folklore and traditions. The festive event was embellished with significant guests - the exhibition was initiated by the State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic Lucia Kurilovská, and the Slovak ambassador to Hungary Pavol Hamžík. “The beauty of the Slovak folk costume is unquestionable. They are pieces of art, symbolizing the character of each region, and the people who live there,” initiated Michaela Pánisová Ležáková, the director of the Slovak Institute in Budapest. Lucia Kurilovská stood before the audience wearing a folk costume. “I’ve worked on the police force for many years, and when I wear my uniform, I am proud of the force. When I put on a folk costume, I am proud of the entire Slovak nation,” she said. The large format photographs captured the interest of the ambassador as well. “The exhibition takes us back to our traditions, showcases our cultural DNA. It’s always important to remember one’s roots,” said Pavol Hamžík. The exhibition’s curator, the CEO of the STAR production publishing house Mária Reháková, also got her word in. “I’m very happy that we can showcase that stunning Slovak folk costume in different countries. The folk costume is embroidered with the beauty of nature, humanity, emotion,” she said, and added, among other things, that the exhibition will move on to Warsaw and Brussels. The famous Sliač Spa also presented at the event, and not to make it all about words, the guests were delighted by a performance of the folklore ensemble Urpín from Banská Bystrica.
