Germany plans to become less dependent on Russian gas with the help of Qatar. That was one of the topics discussed at the May meeting in Berlin between Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz. The Emir also met with the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The Emir confirmed the plans to start supplying Qatari liquefied natural gas to Germany as early as 2024, albeit not coming from Qatar directly because the North Dome gas field extension is only set to be finalized in 2025 or 2026. “We do want our American liquefied gas plant, Golden Pass, in which Qatar Energy owns a 70% stake, to be ready by 2024 so that we can supply Germany,” said the Emir in the past for the German journal Handelsblatt.
